IELTS Validity: How Long Is an IELTS Score Valid?

IELTS results are normally treated as valid for two years from the test date. What that means, who decides, and how to time your test around a deadline.

An IELTS result does not expire in the way a passport does. Nothing happens to your Test Report Form after two years.

What changes is whether anyone will accept it.

The two-year rule

IELTS recommends that results are considered valid for two years after the test has been taken. The reason given is research into second-language loss: without regular use, language ability fades, and a three-year-old score may no longer describe what you can do.

That is a recommendation to the organisations that use IELTS. In practice most of them follow it.

Who actually decides

The organisation you are applying to. IELTS says plainly that organisations “can choose to accept results for a longer period”, and that you should check with them directly.

So there are three possible answers, depending on where your result is going:

The organisation’s ruleWhat it means for you
Two years from the test dateThe standard case. Count from the day you sat the test
A longer periodSome organisations accept older results. Get this in writing
A shorter or specific windowSome ask for a test taken within a set period before you apply

The only safe source is the requirements page for your exact course, employer or visa route. A general statement about “universities in Australia” or “Canadian immigration” is not enough, because rules differ between institutions and between visa categories.

What the validity date is counted from

From the test date, not the date your result was released.

The date that matters at the other end is set by the organisation. It is usually one of these:

  • the day you submit your application
  • the day your course starts
  • a date named in the visa rules

These can be months apart. A result that is valid when you apply may be past two years by the time your course begins, and whether that matters depends entirely on which date the organisation uses. Ask.

Timing your test

Sit the test too late and you miss the deadline. Sit it too early and the result runs out before you need it. Both cost a second test fee.

A simple way to plan it:

  1. Find the last date on which your result must still be valid.
  2. Count back two years. Do not sit the test before that date.
  3. Find your application deadline and count back at least eight weeks. That leaves time for results, and for one more attempt if you miss your target.
  4. Sit the test between those two dates.

If you are planning more than a year ahead, the common mistake is testing too early “to get it out of the way”. Use the early months to prepare and to take mock tests, and sit the real test inside the window.

If your result is about to run out

  • Apply before it does, if your application is otherwise ready. Most organisations check validity on the date of application.
  • Ask the organisation whether it accepts results beyond two years. Some do.
  • Book a new test if neither works. There is no way to extend or renew an old result.

If you only need to improve one skill from a recent test, IELTS One Skill Retake may be an option, but it has to be taken within 60 days of the original test, so it does not help with an old result.

Before you book

Write down three things: the overall band you need, any minimum for each skill, and the date your result must be valid on. What IELTS band score do you need? covers the first two. Then check the current IELTS fee for your country, because every extra attempt costs it again.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an IELTS score valid?
Normally two years from the test date. IELTS recommends that results are considered valid for two years, and most universities and immigration authorities follow that. The organisation receiving your result decides, so check its rule.
Can I use an IELTS result that is more than two years old?
Only if the organisation you are applying to says so. IELTS states that organisations can choose to accept results for a longer period. Most do not, so ask before you rely on an older result.
Does IELTS validity start from the test date or the result date?
From the test date. The two-year recommendation is counted from the day you sat the test, not the day the result was released or the day you received your Test Report Form.
Can I extend the validity of my IELTS score?
No. A result cannot be renewed or extended. If it is no longer accepted, you need to sit the test again and you will receive a new result with a new date.
Is IELTS validity different for Academic and General Training?
No. The two-year recommendation applies to both, and to IELTS for UKVI. What differs is the rule of the organisation you apply to, not the version of the test.
Does my IELTS score need to be valid for my whole course or visa?
Usually not. Organisations normally check that the result is valid on the date you apply or on a date they name. Once you have been accepted, a result that later passes two years is not normally a problem. Confirm this with the organisation.
