If you need IELTS for a UK visa, the first question is not your score. It is which test you are allowed to take.
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) only accepts tests from its approved list, taken in person at an approved centre. For IELTS that means two products: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills. Booking the wrong one is one of the most expensive mistakes candidates make, because the result cannot be used.
The three tests
| IELTS (standard) | IELTS for UKVI | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skills tested | All four | All four | Speaking and listening |
| Versions | Academic, General Training | Academic, General Training | A1, A2, B1 |
| Result | Band 0–9 per skill | Band 0–9 per skill | Pass or Fail |
| Accepted for UK visas | Only for degree-level study | Yes | Yes, for speaking-and-listening routes |
| Where | Any IELTS centre | UKVI-approved centres only | UKVI-approved centres only |
| UK fee, October 2026 | GBP 240 – 260 | GBP 257 | GBP 182 |
IELTS for UKVI is the same test as standard IELTS. The papers, the timing and the marking do not change. What changes is the centre, which meets UKVI’s security requirements, and the paperwork that goes to the Home Office.
Which test each visa needs
UK visa requirements are written as CEFR levels. IELTS publishes what each level means in its tests.
| CEFR level | Test | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Life Skills A1 | Pass |
| A2 | Life Skills A2 | Pass |
| B1, speaking and listening | Life Skills B1 | Pass |
| B1, all four skills | IELTS for UKVI | 4.0 in each skill |
| B2 | IELTS for UKVI | 5.5 in each skill |
| C1 | IELTS for UKVI | 7.0 in each skill |
The minimum applies to every skill. An overall 7.0 with a 5.0 in Writing does not meet B2.
Work visas
The Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Scale-up Worker, Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion and High Potential Individual visas need B2: IELTS for UKVI with at least 5.5 in each skill.
From 8 January 2026, B2 applies to new applicants. People who were already on the Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker or Scale-up routes before that date and are only extending their permission to stay need B1, which is 4.0 in each skill.
Study visas
- Below degree level: B1, which means IELTS for UKVI with 4.0 in each skill.
- Degree level or above: the equivalent of B2, which is 5.5 in each skill. Here standard IELTS Academic is accepted as well as IELTS for UKVI, and your university may set a higher score.
Family, settlement and citizenship
These routes only test speaking and listening, so Life Skills is the usual choice.
- Family visa, first application: A1, Life Skills A1.
- Family visa, extension: A2, Life Skills A2.
- Indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship: B1, Life Skills B1.
Requirements change. Check the GOV.UK page for your visa before you book, and use the visa-by-visa list on the IELTS for UKVI page.
IELTS for UKVI: Academic or General Training?
Both exist. Choose the one your visa, sponsor or university names. Where only a CEFR level is given, check the visa guidance before choosing. Universities usually ask for Academic, and General Training has Reading texts and a Writing Task 1 letter closer to everyday English. Academic vs General Training explains the differences.
Life Skills: what the test is like
Life Skills is a short speaking and listening test taken with an examiner. The tasks are about everyday subjects such as work, transport and the weather. There is no reading or writing and no band score, only a Pass or a Fail.
Because it is pass or fail, the aim is to show clearly that you meet the level, not to score as high as possible. Practise speaking in full answers and asking for repetition when you miss something, as you would in real life.
Results and validity
UKVI accepts results for two years from the date the test was awarded. The test must be on the approved list and taken at an approved location.
Online and at-home tests are not accepted for UK visas.
Before you book
- Find your visa’s CEFR level and skills on its GOV.UK page.
- Choose the test: Life Skills for speaking-and-listening routes, IELTS for UKVI for routes that test all four skills.
- Book at a UKVI-approved centre. On the booking page the product name must include “UKVI”.
- Check the fee. IELTS fees by country lists UKVI prices country by country.
- Prepare for the weakest skill. For B2, 5.5 in every skill is the target, so one weak skill is the main risk.
If you need IELTS for UKVI
The test inside is ordinary IELTS, so practise exactly as you would for the standard test. Take a free IELTS mock test to see your band in each skill. If one is below 5.5, work on that skill first: for most candidates it is Writing, and IELTS Writing Task 2 is the place to start.
