IELTS Listening diagram labelling: parts and processes

Diagram labelling looks technical but rarely tests technical vocabulary. What it actually tests, why answers follow the picture, and the traps that cost marks.

Diagram labelling is the Listening task that intimidates candidates out of proportion to its difficulty. A cross-section of a machine appears, or a piece of laboratory equipment, or a device nobody has seen before, and the assumption is that specialist vocabulary is about to decide the mark.

It almost never is. The vocabulary you need is usually supplied by the audio itself. What is being tested is whether you can hold a spatial description in your head while someone describes it out of order.

Where it appears

Diagram labelling shows up most often in Part 3 or Part 4 — the academic end of the paper, where two students discuss a project or a lecturer explains something. You are given a picture of an object, a device, or a process, with parts indicated by arrows or gaps.

The answer format varies and matters:

  • Write a word from the audio, subject to a word limit.
  • Choose a letter from a supplied list of labels.

Check which one you are dealing with before the audio starts. On write-a-word versions spelling is marked and the word limit applies exactly as it does for note and form completion. On choose-a-letter versions neither risk exists.

The task is orientation, not terminology

If the audio describes a reciprocating vane, the phrase will be spoken clearly and usually repeated. Recognising the term is not the challenge. Knowing which of the eight arrows it points at is.

So the preparation time goes on the picture, not the word list:

  1. Work out what the thing is and which way it sits. Is this a side view or a view from above? Where is the top? If it is a process, where does material enter and where does it leave?
  2. Look at what each gap is attached to. A gap with an arrow pointing at a small component near the base will be described in terms of that position — at the bottom, underneath the chamber, just above the base plate.
  3. Predict the word class. Nearly all diagram answers are nouns, frequently compound nouns (safety valve, cooling chamber, filter unit). If a gap is preceded by made of, expect a material instead.

Answers usually follow the picture, and sometimes do not

Most diagram descriptions move through the object systematically — top to bottom, outside to inside, or in the order material travels through a process. Questions are numbered to follow that path, so answer four generally arrives after answer three.

But this task breaks that pattern more often than other Listening types, because the speakers are usually two people having a conversation rather than one person delivering a monologue. A student says “and before we get to the outlet, can you explain the filter again?” and the description doubles back.

The practical consequence: use the expected order as a guide, not a rule. If you hear a description that clearly belongs to a gap you have already passed, fill it in. Do not assume you must have misheard because it arrived late.

The language that positions everything

As with maps, the marks live in a small set of expressions rather than in technical nouns:

Attached to and inside describe genuinely different relationships, and picking the wrong one puts your answer on the wrong component. These are worth more attention than any specialist term.

Process diagrams add one extra demand

When the diagram is a process rather than an object, the description usually arrives in the passive voice — the mixture is heated, water is drawn off, the residue is collected. Two things follow from that.

First, the sequencing language becomes the navigation, exactly as in a flow chart. Second, a gap may need a verb rather than a noun, which changes your prediction. The liquid is then ___ through a mesh wants a past participle, not a component name.

The three traps

Distractors that name the wrong part. Speakers mention components they are not currently labelling — “it looks like a condenser, but it’s actually the collection vessel”. The first noun is the trap.

Corrections. As in map labelling, self-correction is common: “that goes at the top — sorry, at the top of the inner chamber, not the outer one.” Listen for sorry, actually, I mean, no wait.

Copying a label that is already printed. If a part is already named on the diagram, it is not an answer. Candidates under pressure sometimes write a visible label into a nearby gap. Anything already printed is context, not a solution.

Practising it

The reason this question type feels rare is that it is rare — you might meet one diagram in several full mock tests, which is nowhere near enough repetition to get comfortable. That is precisely the argument for drilling it separately rather than waiting for it to come round.

Work through diagram tasks back to back, and when you get one wrong, identify which of the two failure modes caused it: you did not know where you were on the picture, or you missed the positioning phrase. They need different fixes. The first is an orientation problem solved in the preparation time; the second is a language problem solved by learning the table above.
